If there is any hope for an escape from movies like fantastic 4 and malibu's most wanted, the indie studios are the way out.

Well, it looks like Britney Spears is finally going to become the footnote of musical history she was destined to be. If you didn't see it, she attempted a comeback performance at the VMAs the other night -- and it was the singing and dancing equivalent of a Miss Teen USA contestant explaining geography.
So as a free bit of advice for Britney (one she should have taken long ago), I offer this: if you can't sing worth a shit, this obvious fact can't be covered up by simply dry humping your fellow dancers for 5 minutes in lieu of any actual talent. You at least have to make the train wreck entertaining to watch, or something more like this...
(It may be the musical equivalent of a Don Johnson single, but at least it's watchable.)

"To tie in with forthcoming 2008 releases on DVD of the classic 'LIVE AFTER DEATH' and 'MAIDEN ENGLAND' concert videos (more details coming soon) this tour, aptly entitled 'SOMEWHERE BACK IN TIME', will revisit the band's history by focusing almost entirely on the 80's in both choice of songs played and the stage set, which will be based around the legendary Egyptian Production of the 1984-85 'Powerslave Tour'. This will arguably be the most elaborate and spectacular show the band have ever presented, and will include some key elements of their Somewhere In Time tour of 1986/7, such as the Cyborg Eddie."
For those that know me, this is really exciting for me and I plan on seeing this show if it comes even remotely near Buffalo. This'll probably be the only chance I get at coming close to seeing the shows that I missed growing up.

If any of you went to see Transformers then you probably saw the trailer for an untitled J.J. Abrams movie. I don't know if it'll be good but the trailer is killer. The viral marketing campaign begins at www.1-18-08.com
I read in a few places that the entire movie is filmed through handheld cameras. Dunno. Gimmick or good movie? We'll have to wait and see. As someone on the net stated: "Like the Blair Witch Project. But good. And less snot." ;)

It's The Mouse And His Child, a slightly bizarre, but beautiful, animated film based on the book of the same name. I used to watch this repeatedly when I was a kid, since it was in heavy rotation on HBO, even though it was pretty scary. Check out the Wikipedia synopsis for just a taste.

Don "Mr. Wizard" Herbert dies at 89.
Some of you young scamps would be too young to remember him, but I used to be glued to the set every time he was on. Some of the science was a bit dodgy at times, but he did make learning interesting and fun, and was a big influence on me.
Godspeed, Don.

If you're like me and love bad movies, you were probably a big fan of Mystery Science Theater 3000. And if you weren't, get the fuck out my house ... :) Well, Mike Nelson is back with a similar project called Rifftrax. It's been around for a while, but I decided to try them out last night with their track for Star Wars: Episode I.
Hooo boy. It is, in a word, glorious! I can't recommend it enough. There are some terrific gags on there, and they do a great job of helping you set it up.

... but they were the ones to report that George Lucas thought that Spider-Man 3 was "silly".
From the FA:
Do I even need to comment on this??Lucas told me he has seen all the summer movies since his company, Industrial Light and Magic, does most of the special effects. The only one they didn't work on was "Spider-Man 3." What did he think of it?
"It's silly. It's a silly movie," he said. "There just isn't much there. Once you take it all apart, there's not much story, is there?"
Well, it's not "Star Wars."
"People thought 'Star Wars' was silly, too," he added, with a wink. "But it wasn't."

he Last War
2085. Humanity faces extinction. Alien insects from the edge of our solar system, long hidden behind the façade of reality, descend to enslave us. Hordes of unspeakable horrors roll out from Central Asia, laying waste to anything in their path. The church of the fish-god scours the world for lost occult secrets to unleash terrible forces. Dead gods awaken and turn their dreadful eyes toward the Earth. And within hides a cancer, eating away at the very heart of the New Earth Government.
This is the Aeon War. This is the time of CthulhuTech.
Climb inside a thirty-foot tall war machine and rain down hell on the unwavering Migou. Fight tooth and nail on the front lines against the horrific beasts of the Rapine Storm. Seek out the disgusting corruption of the insidious Esoteric Order of Dagon. Explore the dark world of the malignant Chrysalis Corporation and their unseen monstrous agents. Sift through secrets long thought lost and bend the power of the cosmos to your will. Join in symbiosis with something beyond time and space and become a shape-shifting bringer of wrath.
Nowhere else will you find a setting like this.
