Alt Text: Killjoy Cooking With the Dungeons & Dragons Crowd

If cookbook fans talked about cooking the way that RPG fans talk about gaming, it would sound mysteriously like Alt Text: Killjoy Cooking With the Dungeons & Dragons Crowd.

And if you think this is outlandish, you obviously haven't spent enough time at RPG.net.

"Hizzona" has passed on

The Buffalo News: Home: Former Mayor James D. Griffin dies at 78 in Orchard Park nursing home
Might not mean much to anyone who didn't grow up in Buffalo, but Jimmy Griffin was an indelible part of mine and many others' childhood. Who can forget his immortal advice to a city ravaged by winter storms in 1985:

Stay inside, grab a six-pack and watch a good football game.
There was ever only one mayor of Buffalo. RIP, Jimmy

Robert Asprin, RIP

Just found out that Bob Asprin, author of the Myth Adventures series, recently passed away:

On May 22, 2008, Bob passed away quietly in his home in New Orleans, LA. He had been in good spirits and working on several new projects, and was set to be the Guest of Honor at a major science fiction convention that very weekend. He is survived by his mother, his sister, his daughter and his son, and his cat, Princess, not to mention countless friends and fans and numerous legendary fictional characters.

He will be greatly missed.
Man, he was one of my favorites; I think I've read just about everything he's ever written. Not only was he known for the Myth series, he also edited the early Thieves' World shared world anthologies, and was a gamer and SCAdian to boot ("Yang the Nauseating").

He will be missed.

Ah, songs from forgotten days gone by....

Don't know who's responsible for this, but someone has posted a page of Songs by Tom Lehrer. Who, you might ask? Probably one of the funniest, smartest, and cleverest songwriters of the 20th century. He's like a straighter and geekier Cole Porter. Check out my favorites, "The Masochism Tango" and "Poisoning Pigeons In The Park".

"Tick, tock, tick, tock ... hypnotic, isn't it?"

"Oh, the ... turtality..."

Here's a clip from a super-low budget Russian horror flick featuring a giant, mutated turtle attacking a city. Friend to all children, he ain't ....

"Oh, no, the turtle is attacking! Walk away at a brisk pace!"

Where was this when we were kids?!

Eight Virginia Cub Scouts get a gaming all-nighter as a reward for earning Webelos certification. Boys claim that it still doesn't take the sting out of being "We-blows".

Seriously, if this had been an option, I would have stayed in the damn Boy Scouts.

Just what we need, gamer merit badges. Oh, wait, we have those, they're called Achievements ... ;)

So, I want to get more than one take...

But if I hit someone in the head with an axe, I am pretty sure they wont let me do it again.

So I make a fake axe. I'ma cut the blade off where it is supposed to be buried in the head. I am going to "age" the real axe, then paint the fake to match.

Upcoming Convention Schedule

I know Brian and Tom asked about these, so I figured I'd post the dates for as many game conventions as I'm aware of this year, as well as which ones I'm planning on attending. Feel free to post any other events that should be included:

  • SimCon: March 27 - March 30. I've signed up to run two events on that Saturday.
  • UBCon: April 11-13. I'm planning on running two events here. We'll see how well attended they are.
  • Western New York Savages: April 19. This is being put together by some guys out of Rochester and being held at SUNY Geneseo. Not sure yet how good the turn-out will be, but we'll see.
  • Origins: June 25 - June 29. Can't go to this one; my sister's getting married that weekend ... more's the pity.
  • GenCon: August 14 - 17. The big one; wouldn't miss this for the world!
  • Con on the Cob: October 2 - 5. Another one I wouldn't miss for anything; just too damn much fun.
More shows as I find out about them. I know that Rod mentioned a date for the Creep Show this year, but I don't remember it off-hand. I'm sure he'll put it up soon ...

Free advice for Britney

Well, it looks like Britney Spears is finally going to become the footnote of musical history she was destined to be. If you didn't see it, she attempted a comeback performance at the VMAs the other night -- and it was the singing and dancing equivalent of a Miss Teen USA contestant explaining geography.

So as a free bit of advice for Britney (one she should have taken long ago), I offer this: if you can't sing worth a shit, this obvious fact can't be covered up by simply dry humping your fellow dancers for 5 minutes in lieu of any actual talent. You at least have to make the train wreck entertaining to watch, or something more like this...

(It may be the musical equivalent of a Don Johnson single, but at least it's watchable.)

Up The Irons!

"To tie in with forthcoming 2008 releases on DVD of the classic 'LIVE AFTER DEATH' and 'MAIDEN ENGLAND' concert videos (more details coming soon) this tour, aptly entitled 'SOMEWHERE BACK IN TIME', will revisit the band's history by focusing almost entirely on the 80's in both choice of songs played and the stage set, which will be based around the legendary Egyptian Production of the 1984-85 'Powerslave Tour'. This will arguably be the most elaborate and spectacular show the band have ever presented, and will include some key elements of their Somewhere In Time tour of 1986/7, such as the Cyborg Eddie."

For those that know me, this is really exciting for me and I plan on seeing this show if it comes even remotely near Buffalo. This'll probably be the only chance I get at coming close to seeing the shows that I missed growing up.

Ok Dan, step up!

1-18-08

If any of you went to see Transformers then you probably saw the trailer for an untitled J.J. Abrams movie. I don't know if it'll be good but the trailer is killer. The viral marketing campaign begins at www.1-18-08.com

I read in a few places that the entire movie is filmed through handheld cameras. Dunno. Gimmick or good movie? We'll have to wait and see. As someone on the net stated: "Like the Blair Witch Project. But good. And less snot." ;)
